01 Lovelight Instrumental Jam 02 Alligator 03 Jam 04 Caution (Do Not Step On The Tracks) 05 Cryptical Envelopment 06 Viola Lee Blues
Notes
Thanks to Jeremy Poynton for the cdr
- Lovelight starts off and ends with brief vocals from Pigpen
- Alligator is more or less instrumental. You can hear some very faint vocals, deep in the
background.
- Jam has impromptu Alligator vocals from Pigpen at the start. It later morphs into
Caution.
There is some hiss, some tracks are worse than others but nothing to bad!

Pretty good, actually. Not a very spirited session, but they liked to play live.

Viola Lee out of place
The bulk of this session is exactly the same as the "xx-xx-67" session that L Rosley mentions - only here it's in annoyingly trebley sound, so I recommend
...
the other copy instead. That copy also has a great, unique studio Smokestack Lightning. The Viola Lee filler here is not from the studio, but is edited from the 1-14-67 show.

Recording for Anthem of the Sun- 1st Other One, early Mickey
This sounds like a studio recording session for Anthem of the Sun. Mickey Hart, who wasn't yet performing in shows with the Dead, is clearly audible on
...
percussion. Not a great listen, but interesting historically. This is first known appearance of Cryptical Evenlopment/The Other One. (First live performance was 2 days later, 10/22/67). The band isn't terribly inspired or energetic, compared to the live shows from 1967. It is indeed a "Sleepy Alligator" on the 3-minute track, but the band wakes up on the track labeled Jam. Caution has some interesting bits. Cryptical Enevelopment/Other One is laid out along the lines of Anthem. Alligator-through-Cryptical take up about the same time as they do on Anthem, so it seems they are aiming here to fit it all on the vinyl LP. Viola Lee sounds most like what they were playing live, but unfortunately is cut off. Quality varies for awful to tolerable to awful, with various instruments or vocals inaudible at times. Not to complain, though, we're lucky to have this interesting bit of Dead history. Thanks to Archive for making this available.
